 central province [in sinhala madyama palatha]of srilanka consists primarily of mountainous terrain. both the hill capital kandy and the city of nuwaraeliya are located within the central province as well as sri pada.the province produces much of the famaous cylon tea,planted bythe british inthe 1860s after devastating  disease killed all coffee plantations in the province attracts many tourists, with hill station towns such as kandy,gampola,hatton and nuwaraeliya.

 kandy,the second major city and the last stronghold of  the sinhala kings, is visited by almost all foreign and domestic travelers for many reasons . the most important attraction here is the temple of the tooth where buddha's tooth relic is housed in the palace of the last king. when the annual pageant named ''perahera'' is held every august,it attracts huge crowds to see the best of drummers,dancers,and the largest parade of elephants of the island. the city with the beautiful lake becomes a fairland with the pealing of bells,chanting of prayers the sound of drums and and illuminated streets,homes and buildings.yet kandy is more than all of this the other reaches of the ancient hill capital  is equally interesting to anyone who wishes to spend a few days and enjoy cool climate there.the panoramic views from hills like hantana that from the skyline here are fantastic.just a little less than a kilometer from the city there is the natural hub of a rainforest call udawattakele. around the 16th.century this area was earmarked by the king as a section of the Royal palace garden. since british rule in kandy in the year 1815 the natural forest just overlooking the city has become a hotspot for people from all around the country to get away from the hustle and the bustle and heat around april every year. an evening stroll around the lake,or a stroll up to the massive bahirawakanda buddha statue ,have their own fascinations. the museum which is located in a section of the  king's palace is also a must for visitors. for those interested in the arts and crafts the villages close by would be ideal centers. with hotels and food outlets throughout the compact city kandy is comfortable refuge for any type of traveler.

KANDY TEMPLE OF TOOTH RELIC

this important buddhist shrine is located in the very heart of kandy which is 116 kms north-east of colombo at an elevation of 490 meters above sea level.almost all travelers who arrive in the island visit the city of kandy in their travels .it take only three hours to reach this heritage site from colombo by road. as its name suggests,the temple of tooth relic is custodian of tooth relic  which is enshrined in an especially security oriented site in the temple until it is taken out for public veneration every year in the august festival of the tooth relic

the festival is unequalled in grandeur as a national attraction every year and one sees vast droves of tourist bustling with locals at the fantastic street parades of caparisoned elephants ,brightly accoutred dancers and vast throngs of sightseers and devotees which come to this festival from all parts of the country.many travelers from all parts of the globe visit this city especially to have a glimpse of the annual pageant that is held there.hundreds of drummers,dancers,well disciplined mammoth tusked elephants take majestically to the streets at night,monitored by elegantly dressed chieftains following the procession. thousands of local throng the streets waiting  four hours for the arrival of the procession known as the perahera.its showcasing of perhaps the most vital essence of the sri lankan heritage and culture.the whole city is lit up and it takes a carnival atmosphere.the royal complex which has the kings and queens palaces,abuts the temple and the kandy lake then come the audience hall, the royal boat house and the royal summer residence.there are many other places of interest in the vicinity worth a visit.star class,average or budget accommodation is there aplenty while craft villages such as embekke and kalapura well merit a call for souvenir hunters.
